魏斐德(Frede　Wakeman，Jr．)　国际著名中国明清史专家。1959年毕业于哈佛大学，1965年获加利福尼亚远东史博士学位。20世纪60年代后期，任台湾大学中国语言研究计划主任，1971年任加利福尼亚大学历史学教授和美国学术团体理事会中国文明委员会委员。现任加利福尼亚大学伯克利分校历史学教授，该校中国研究中心主任，美国亚洲研究会会员，全美学者联合会会长。主要著有：《洪业：清朝开国史》(1970)、《历史与意志：毛泽东思想的哲学透视》(1973)、《中华帝国的衰落》(1975)、《中华帝国晚期的冲突与控制》(1976)、《叛乱与革命：中国历史上民众运动研究》(1977)等。

布鲁斯•特里格（1937—2006），世界著名考古学家，被誉为考古学界文艺复兴式的人物。生前系加拿大麦吉尔大学人类学系詹姆斯•麦吉尔（James McGill）教授，加拿大皇家学会会员，苏格兰文物学会、英国史前学会荣誉会员。耶鲁大学博士，先后在埃及与苏丹从事考古学研究。兴趣包括早期文明研究、考古学史和考古学与人类学理论。由于在社会科学方面的杰出贡献，他曾获得多项学术奖励，包括魁北克政府授予的声誉极高的莱昂-热兰奖。他有大量著作问世，除本书外，尚有《时间与传统》、《早期文明：语境中的埃及》、《理解早期文明：比较研究》、《超越历史：史前史的方法》、《剑桥美洲土著史第一卷》（合编）等。
